How come mainstream rap/hip hop beats are so generic?

My girlfriend lives in a very hood area and when cars drive by they are often blasting rap/hip hop. Hell I do the same but I stick to underground/old school. But all the beats seem so damn generic like they were taken right off a cookie cutter. Is it because the larger audience lacks the mindset to handle originality or are mainstream producers just that lazy?
